What is Genesis?

Genesis is the name of a luxury subsidiary of Hyundai, which was founded in 2015 and today operates all over the globe, distributing its high-end cars, which are produced not only in Asia but also in Europe and the USA.

The Hyundai Genesis was unveiled in 2008, and the badging of the earliest models in the Genesis range clearly linked them to the parent brand, featuring Hyundai's circular 'H' badge. However, this approach was only applied to vehicles sold in the U.S.; in other markets, the winged badge was used.

Later, the company adopted a different strategy, allowing customers who purchased a Genesis car in the U.S. to choose between the standard Hyundai 'H' badge or the logo featuring the word 'Genesis.' This approach provided the company with valuable feedback from customers.

What did they discover? According to Dave Zuchowski, a former Hyundai U.S. CEO, about 80 percent of Genesis buyers opted for the winged logo. This indicated that customers wanted not only a car with upscale features, comfort, and performance but also a vehicle with a distinctive luxury badge.

In 2015, the company announced the separation of the Genesis brand as an independent global luxury division. Given the insights gained, it was natural for models introduced around that time to feature the winged badge on the hood, steering wheel, and throughout the interior. However, Hyundai's 'H' emblem remained visible on the rear of the cars.

As explained by Mike O'Brien, the company's vice president, they wanted customers to recognize that these cars were initially part of the Hyundai lineup. At the same time, he noted that buyers of premium vehicles sought a premium experience, and the winged badge served as a visual representation of this promise. The logo helped convey that the Genesis range was developed with a different approach compared to Hyundai's more mainstream offerings.
