Daimler AG, one of the world's leading manufacturers of cars and trucks, is based in Stuttgart, Germany. The company was formed in 1926 from the merger of Benz & Cie and Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft.

The company is commonly referred to as Mercedes. Besides Mercedes-Benz, it also markets vehicles and components under brands like Mitsubishi Fuso, Smart, Setra, and Detroit Diesel, among others.

One of Daimler's oldest predecessors, Benz & Cie, was founded in 1883 by three co-founders, including Karl Benz. The Benz & Cie logo was quite simple, featuring only the company's name in a traditional serif type, which did not reflect Karl Benz's innovative spirit.

When Daimler Benz was established, it adopted a logo similar to that of Benz & Cie, featuring only the brand name in an all-cap serif type.

The difference lay in the size of the letters. While Benz & Cie's wordmark had glyphs of the same height, the 1926 logo featured initials that were taller than the other letters.

This logo was used for over seventy years until the company was renamed DaimlerChrysler. The overall style of the wordmark remained largely unchanged, though the color shifted from black to dark blue.

Eventually, the design team updated the typeface to a more contemporary one. While serifs remained, their sharp ends were streamlined, as seen in the top of the 'A'. The typeface became bolder, and the right end of the 'R' was slightly extended for a more dynamic look.

In addition to the dark blue logo, there was also a black-and-white version.

While the letter shapes stayed the same, the new silver color gave the Daimler logo a fresh look. White highlights added a 3D effect, giving it a stylish and dynamic appearance.

Daimler often uses the three-pointed star of Mercedes-Benz as an additional symbol, such as at its central headquarters in Stuttgart. The star's history dates back to a postcard Gottlieb Daimler sent to his wife in 1872.

When the company later adopted this symbol, it was explained that the star's three points represented Daimler's engines dominating land, sea, and air.

What is Daimler?

Daimler is the name of one of the oldest luxury automobile manufacturers, which was established in Germany and witnessed the creating of the legendary Mercedes Benz brand. Today Daimler is not just a car marque, but the name of the company, which owns Mercedes and Smart.
