Benelli was established in 1911 by Teresa Boni Benelli and her six sons: Giuseppe, Giovanni, Francesco, Filippo, Domenico, and Antonio ('Tonino'). The company began as a bicycle and motorcycle repair shop, also producing spare parts.

In 1919, Benelli produced its first engine, a 75cc two-stroke model. Their first complete motorcycle followed in 1921, featuring a 98cc engine.

A significant milestone came in 1927 with the introduction of a 175cc four-stroke engine featuring an innovative 'cascade' overhead camshaft system, designed by Giuseppe Benelli. This engine became a signature of the brand and propelled them to racing success.

Throughout its history, Benelli has been known for its racing achievements, innovative designs, and high-performance motorcycles. Notable models include the Leoncino, introduced in 1951, and the Tornado 650 in the 1960s.
